Thank you for the honor of serving the people of the 49th District as your Representative in the North Carolina House. In 2016 and 2018, I was elected and re-elected with your strong financial support and volunteer efforts. We are so grateful to have your shared commitment to build a NC that works for everyone. I hope to continue in service to you and the State of NC by being re-elected to a third term in our 2020 election.

1/7

Even after electing more balanced legislative bodies in both the House the Senate in 2018, I have been very disappointed that the NC General Assembly Leadership is still unwilling to work together with those of us in the Minority -- by not allowing many critical bills to even be heard; and despite numerous offers, by refusing to negotiate on critical bills such as our important budget. The Majority continues to push through legislation that focuses on wrong priorities, missing opportunities to build a stronger NC – without giving us, and those we represent, a voice; and without considering the Governor a co-equal participant in the making of public policy. I believe that you -- the people of NC -- want us to work together -- for responsive, representative and transparent government.

As a professional mediator committed to finding common ground, I want to work with all members in addressing the issues we face, and make prudent, common sense investments in our people, our infrastructure, our environment, and our public schools.

Some of the things we should be doing:

  • Placing the highest priority on funding public education. It is clear from the recent reports by WestEd and the Governor’s Commission on a Sound Basic Education, and supported by Consent Orders related to the Leandro case, we must do much more. I will continue to fight for fully funding our public schools and the professional educators and support staff who hold in their hands the future of our children – and therefore, the future of our state.

  • Closing the healthcare coverage gap and addressing the exploding costs of healthcare. We should expand Medicaid -- good for our economy, our rural hospitals, as well as those who desperately need health insurance. I believe affordable healthcare is a right, not a privilege.Millions of NC tax dollars are going each year to support Medicaid Expansion in 39 other states while half a million people in our state are without health insurance.

  • Adjusting our tax structure to assist working families. We are on an unsustainable financial path with an unfair tax system that favors the wealthy and large corporations, while working families are paying the price as they struggle to make ends meet.  With the current tax structure, we will not be able to provide even basic services and programs to our citizens as the state continues to grow rapidly.

  • Advancing public policies that provide technical training and post-secondary education for the jobs of the future, accessible and affordable housing for everyone, equality and equity, and the protection of our environment. We are at a critical tipping point in ensuring that ALL of the people of NC have opportunities to live safely and sustainably, work productively, and succeed in our great state.

We simply are not investing wisely for the future.

I believe that North Carolina can be a national leader in education, job creation, equality and equity, and good government. Please join me in this effort to make sure ALL North Carolinians are well educated, included and protected, and healthy -- with sufficient financial resources to live an abundant life.

I would be honored and grateful to have your continued support. Let’s stand together again this year, and elect legislators who are committed to building a State that gives opportunity to everyone, providing a sustainable future for our residents, our children and our grandchildren.

I’ve never been more determined to fight for the future of our state.  And we’ve never needed your help more. Thank you!
