Thank you for the honor of serving the people of the 49th District as your Representative in the North Carolina House. In 2016, with your support and encouragement, we were able to win one of the most competitive races in the State and take a step towards the goal of creating a more balanced legislature that represents ALL of the people in NC. And in 2018, with your help, I was re-elected while also supporting the election of 10 new Representatives who are now standing with us towards that goal. We are so grateful to have your shared commitment to build a NC that works for everyone.
In my second term as your Representative, I am still concerned about the huge partisan divide that exists in our General Assembly. Though we were successful at breaking the Super Majority in both chambers in 2018, both the House Majority and the Senate Majority continue to push through legislation that frequently focuses on wrong priorities, missing opportunities to build a stronger NC.
As a mediator, I want to work with all members to find common ground in addressing the issues we face, and make prudent, common sense investments in our people, our infrastructure, our environment, and our public schools. Too often, we are not allowing the voices and needs of ALL North Carolinians to be heard and addressed. Some of the things we should be doing:
Closing the healthcare coverage gap. We should expand Medicaid -- good for our economy, our rural hospitals, as well as those who desperately need health insurance. I believe affordable healthcare is a right, not a privilege.
Placing the highest priority on funding public education. While we are making some progress in some areas, doing something is not doing enough. With current appropriation levels, our schools cannot fund adequate classroom supplies, hire much needed school nurses and counselors, and pay ALL our talented and dedicated teachers, principals and other key staff competitive salaries.
Adjusting our tax structure to assist working families. We are on an unsustainable financial path with an unfair tax system that favors the wealthy and large corporations, while working families are paying the price as they struggle to make ends meet. With the current tax structure, we will not be able to provide even basic services and programs to our citizens as the state continues to grow rapidly.
We simply are not investing wisely for the future.
I believe that North Carolina can be a leader in education, job creation, and good government. Please join me in this effort to make sure ALL North Carolinians are well educated, prosperous and healthy, with sufficient financial resources to live an abundant life.
I am grateful for your support. Let’s stand together and build a State that gives opportunity to everyone, providing a sustainable future for our children and grandchildren. Thank you!
